An extra-heavy, thick paste made of powdered acrylic solids bound in an acrylic binder. It can be mixed with ProChroma colours to create a very thick paint with the ability to retain heavy texture, with minimal shrinkage as it dries. It is a gummy, somewhat sticky product which can clog all but the stiffest of brushes, and so It works best for impasto techniques with a painting knife, However, it can be diluted with soft body or fluid binder if a softer consistency is desired. We do not recommend thinning with water, as in order to maintain flexibility and durability in a paint film containing 'high-build' solids, a high proportion of acrylic binder to solids should be maintained.
** Final surface finish will be matt with a slightly rubbery/flexible characteristic.
Unlike other heavy structure pastes on the market which use mineral solids such as marble dust, pumice or clay, we have used acrylic polymer solids, which retain much better flexibility in thick paint applications and in turn reduces chances of crazing or cracking.
Due to the inclusion of the high-build solids, this paste/binder is naturally opaque white. It can either be applied directly to the support for added texture, then painted over once dry, or it can be mixed with ProChroma pigments to create, possibly the thickest impasto paint on the market.
The innate white of the paste is not very strong and so the pigments when mixed in, easily overpower it, giving good strong colour. However, be sure to really spend time
mixing it thoroughly on the palette to ensure the pigment is fully bound within the paste.
It becomes less workable over time as it dries, so we find it is best to mix up batches as you go, rather than mixing a large batch on the palette. For a time though, it can be reconstituted on the palette with the addition of some fluid or soft body acrylic binder.
